The method used to take the stump out determines the size, shape, and depth of the hole you're left with, and that changes how much fill you need and how careful you have to be about hidden voids.

A stump grinder chews the trunk and the surface roots down to 8 to 12 inches below grade, sometimes a little deeper on a large trunk. What's left behind isn't an empty hole — it's a bowl-shaped depression, usually 2 to 4 feet across for a typical residential shade tree, packed with a mix of shredded wood chips, sawdust, and the native soil the grinder churned up along the way. From the surface, it can look like the job is half done already, since the depression is already loosely filled with something.

Full removal — pulling the stump and root ball out with an excavator, backhoe, or a stump-pulling attachment — is a completely different animal. Instead of a shallow bowl, you get an actual crater, often 2 to 4 feet deep and several feet wide for a mature tree, sometimes wider if the root flare was extensive. On top of that, mature trees send structural roots radiating outward from the trunk like spokes on a wheel. When those get torn out or snapped off during extraction, they leave narrow channels and pockets running away from the main hole, sometimes extending several feet before they taper off. Those channels aren't always visible once the surface has been raked and graded, which is exactly why they cause problems later.

Why You Can't Just Backfill With the Wood Chips

This is the mistake I see most often, and it's an understandable one — the chips are already sitting right there in the hole, so it feels efficient to just push them back in, add a little topsoil on top, and call it done. The problem is that wood chips, sawdust, and mulch are organic material, and organic material breaks down. It doesn't matter whether it's shredded fine by a grinder or left in bigger chunks; fungi and soil microbes go to work on it as soon as it's buried and stays damp, and that process continues for months to years, not days.

As the wood decomposes, it loses volume. What was a solid-looking backfill in month one becomes a soft, spongy, partially-collapsed mass by month twelve, and the ground surface above it settles down to fill the gap. That's the classic homeowner complaint: "the spot where the tree was keeps sinking." It's not bad luck or bad soil — it's the predictable result of using decomposing organic matter as structural backfill. The same logic applies to a much smaller degree with topsoil, which has enough organic content of its own that it isn't the right choice for filling depth; it belongs on top as a cap, not as the bulk fill (more on that below).

The Right Way to Backfill a Stump Hole

Once the stump is out, the fix is straightforward, but it takes a little more effort than raking chips back into place.

1. Clear out the wood debris first

Rake and shovel out the wood chips, sawdust, mulch, and any loose bark or root fragments until you're down to firm native soil or subsoil at the bottom of the hole. Small amounts of fine sawdust mixed into the surrounding soil aren't worth chasing, but you want the bulk of the organic material gone before anything permanent goes back in. On a grinding job this might only take a few minutes with a shovel and a wheelbarrow; on a full root-ball removal it's usually already been done by the excavation crew, but it's worth double-checking the bottom and sides of the hole for stray root chunks.

2. Backfill with clean fill dirt in compacted lifts

Skipping compaction and just dumping loose dirt in all at once is almost as bad as using the wood chips — loose fill settles under its own weight and under rainfall, just more slowly and less dramatically than decomposing wood.

If the stump hole sits where a shed, paver patio, or other structure is going in, use structural fill instead of standard clean fill dirt for the full depth — it compacts to a denser, more stable base and is the right call anywhere you're building on top of backfill rather than just growing grass over it.

3. Cap with topsoil if lawn or landscaping is going back over it

Once the hole is filled level with the surrounding grade using compacted fill dirt, cap the top 4 to 6 inches with topsoil if you're reseeding lawn, laying sod, or planting anything in that spot. Topsoil has the organic content and nutrients that clean fill dirt doesn't, which is exactly why it works well as a cap but not as the bulk fill underneath — you want the nutrient-rich, biologically active material near the surface where roots need it, and the stable, compactable material doing the structural work below.

Watch for Hidden Root Channels Before You Call It Finished

This step gets skipped constantly, and it's the reason some stump-hole backfills settle unevenly even when the main hole was filled correctly. On a full removal, the structural roots that ran outward from the trunk don't just vanish — when they're torn loose from the root ball, they often leave narrow tunnels and voids in the soil that radiate away from the main crater, sometimes for several feet, especially in the direction the tree's biggest limbs grew (roots tend to mirror canopy spread). These channels can be a few inches to over a foot deep, and they're easy to miss once the main hole is filled and the surface is raked smooth.

Before doing final grading, walk the area around the removed root ball and probe the ground every foot or so with a steel rod, piece of rebar, or a long screwdriver, pushing it in by hand. Solid, undisturbed soil resists; a hidden void or loose channel will let the rod sink in easily with little effort. Where you find a soft spot, dig it out enough to backfill it properly rather than just grading over it and hoping it firms up on its own — it won't, and that's exactly where you'll see a secondary dip show up later.

Even after a careful job, it's worth keeping an eye on the area for the first two or three months, particularly after heavy rain when saturated soil settles more than dry soil. A little touch-up fill in a low spot that shows up a month later is normal and easy; a settled trench that's been sodded over and forgotten about is a bigger job to fix.

How Much Fill Dirt Do You Actually Need?

The volume depends entirely on which kind of hole you're dealing with, and the two scenarios aren't close.

A typical grind pocket — say, 3 feet across and 12 inches deep after the chips are cleared out — isn't a straight-sided box, it's closer to a shallow bowl or cone shape, so the actual volume is well under what a simple box calculation would suggest. Worked out, a hole that size comes to roughly 0.1 cubic yard — a couple of wheelbarrow loads, not a truckload.

A full extraction crater is a different story. A mid-size crater — 6 feet across and 3 feet deep — runs close to 1 cubic yard once you account for the bowl shape rather than a straight box. A larger crater from a mature tree, say 8 feet across and 4 feet deep, can run 2 to 3 cubic yards, and that's before adding extra material for any root channels you find and fill in separately. For a big removal job, plan on the higher end of that range and expect to top it off once you've probed for and backfilled the radiating channels.

A Single Stump Hole Might Not Be Worth a Full Delivery

Where a delivery does make sense is when the stump hole is one item on a bigger list — regrading a low spot in the yard, building up an area before sod, filling in a settled trench from old utility work, or general yard leveling. If you're already planning to level a yard or address other low spots on the property, folding the stump hole into that same order is the efficient way to use a delivery you're making anyway, rather than paying for a dedicated trip for a couple of wheelbarrows' worth of dirt.

What NOT to Use to Fill a Stump Hole

A few materials show up in stump holes that shouldn't:

Wood chips or mulch as the bulk fill. Covered above — they decompose and the ground sinks. Fine as surface mulch elsewhere in the yard, not as backfill.

Construction debris or demolition fill. Broken concrete, brick fragments, drywall scraps, and treated lumber sometimes end up in a hole as a convenient way to get rid of them. They don't compact evenly, they can leave large voids between chunks, and treated lumber leaches chemicals into the soil that you don't want anywhere near a lawn or garden bed.

Straight topsoil as the deep fill. Topsoil is the right cap material, but it's not meant to be the structural fill for a 3-foot-deep hole. It's more expensive than clean fill dirt for no structural benefit, and its higher organic content means more long-term settling than you'd get from clean fill.

Unscreened fill with large rock, if anything is being built on top. If the spot is going to carry a paver patio, shed foundation, or walkway, oversized rock or debris mixed into the fill creates uneven support underneath. Structural fill, properly compacted, is the right material there.
