Fill Dirt and Base Prep for a New Above-Ground Pool Installation

This one is about building a level, stable pad under a pool that hasn't gone up yet, and it's one of the few dirt jobs where "close enough" genuinely isn't.

Why Level Ground Isn't Optional on an Above-Ground Pool

An in-ground pool sits inside an excavated hole with a poured or sprayed shell doing the work of holding back the surrounding earth. An above-ground pool has none of that. The wall is a thin ring of resin, steel, or aluminum panels held up by a top rail and bottom track, and its entire structural strategy is even support around the full circumference. There's no footing distributing the load — the bottom track sits directly on whatever's underneath it.

Fill a 24-foot round pool and you're putting roughly 13,000 to 15,000 gallons into that ring — over 100,000 pounds pressing outward against the wall and straight down into the ground under the track. If the ground under one section is even slightly lower than the rest, that spot carries less support and more water pressure than everywhere else. That's exactly what stresses wall seams, pulls the liner unevenly, and in bad cases blows a wall panel out once the pool is full. Out of level by an inch or two usually doesn't fail outright — it just goes visibly crooked over a season, wrinkles the liner, and wears unevenly at the seams until something finally gives.

How Much Unevenness Is Actually Acceptable

Pool manufacturers are specific about this because it's the most common cause of warranty claims. Most installation manuals call for the base to be level within 1 inch across the entire pad, checked in a grid pattern across the full diameter — not just at a couple of spots. Larger pools and heavier steel wall systems sometimes call for tighter tolerances still, since a bigger diameter gives a small slope more distance to compound into a real difference in support from one side to the other.

One inch sounds forgiving until you check a yard with a level and a straightedge. Most residential lots carry some intentional pitch, usually 2 to 5 percent, to move rainwater away from the house. A 2 percent slope across a 24-foot pad works out to almost 6 inches of drop from one side to the other — nowhere near the 1-inch tolerance a pool needs. "It looks flat to me" is almost never good enough, which is why regrading the footprint is a real part of this project, not an optional extra.

Building the Base the Right Way

The most common mistake we see is building a pool base directly on top of grass. Sod and its root mat are organic material, and organic material decomposes. Bury it under fill and a full pool, and it keeps breaking down for months afterward, leaving voids that show up as soft spots and dips under the pool floor later. Strip the entire footprint to bare mineral soil first — typically 2 to 4 inches deep, enough to remove the grass, the root mat, and any topsoil with visible organic content in it.

Once you're down to bare soil, low spots need to come up to a single, consistent grade. This is where a lot of DIY installs overcorrect: people dump a thick layer of loose sand across the whole footprint, thinking sand equals a soft, pool-friendly surface. Loose, uncompacted sand does the opposite of what you want — it has almost no shear strength on its own, so it shifts under foot traffic during setup and shifts again, worse, once the pool is full and standing water weight is pressing straight down on it. That's how you get the dished, uneven floor that shows up as liner wrinkles the first season.

Build the base up with clean fill dirt or compacted sand, not loose sand alone, and compact it in layers — anything deeper than 2 to 3 inches should go down as separate lifts, each tamped down before the next goes on, rather than dumped all at once. A hand tamper or rented plate compactor is plenty at this scale; this isn't a foundation pad needing engineered compaction testing, but it does need a real pass, not just a rake. Skipping compaction is how a base that measured level the day you built it ends up a half-inch low in one corner by the time you've filled the pool, because loose fill settles unevenly under the first real load it sees. If your existing grade is already close and you're only correcting an inch or two here and there, compacted fill dirt brought to a clean, uniform grade is often all you need before the final sand cap described below.

Sizing the Pad

The pad needs to be bigger than the pool itself. Plan on 2 to 3 feet of level ground beyond the pool's outer edge on all sides — that margin covers the frame and track system that extends slightly past the wall on most kits, gives you room to walk around the pool during assembly and maintenance, and keeps the ground under the pool's edge from dropping off into unleveled or sloped ground right at the wall line. For a 24-foot round pool, that turns your working footprint into a 28- to 30-foot circle. For an oval, add that same margin around the full perimeter, not just at the ends.

How Much Fill Dirt You Actually Need

Exact yardage depends heavily on your existing slope, not just pool size — a lot with 4 inches of pitch across the pad and a lot that's already close to level need very different amounts of fill even for the same size pool. That said, here's what the geometry looks like for the two sizes we get asked about most.

24-foot round pool: With the 2- to 3-foot margin added, you're working with a pad roughly 28 to 30 feet across, or about 600 to 700 square feet. If your lot is close to level and you're really only correcting a few inches of variance across that footprint, that averages out to somewhere around 4 to 7 cubic yards of fill dirt. On a more significant slope, where you're cutting high spots and filling low ones across a larger average depth, plan toward the higher end of that range or beyond it.

33-foot oval pool: The same margin on a large oval footprint typically works out to roughly 700 to 800 square feet once you account for the oval shape rather than a full rectangle. With a comparable few inches of average fill, that generally lands around 10 to 15 cubic yards, climbing from there if the site needs real regrading rather than minor leveling. Oval pools tend to go on larger properties with more room for the ground to pitch across that longer footprint, so don't be surprised if an oval pad on a sloped yard needs noticeably more than a round pool's worth.

Rather than guess, run your actual footprint through our yardage calculator — length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27, gives cubic yards, and add 10 to 15 percent on top for compaction. A single tandem dump truck load (10 cubic yards) covers most round pool bases with room to spare and fits a standard residential driveway; larger oval pads on sloped lots may need a bit more than one tandem load.

What NOT to Use

Loose sand as the entire base. Without compacted fill underneath, sand shifts under load. Use it only as a thin final layer, never as the structural fill.

Sod or topsoil under the pad. Both carry organic material that decomposes and leaves voids. Strip them off before bringing in fill, and don't use topsoil as backfill in low spots — save it for landscaping around the pool's edge afterward, not underneath it.

Unscreened fill with rocks, roots, or debris. Anything larger than a golf ball sitting under a vinyl liner will eventually work its way up or create a hard point that punctures the liner once water weight presses it down.

Whatever spoil pile happens to be sitting on the property. Reusing dirt from a nearby project sounds efficient, but if you don't know what's in it, you're gambling the base of a pool you're about to fill with a season's worth of water on unscreened material. Clean fill sourced for the job is cheap insurance against that.

Cap With a Thin Sand Layer, Then Check Level Again

Once fill dirt is at grade and compacted, most pool manuals call for a final smoothing layer — typically an inch or two of sand — spread directly under where the floor and liner will sit. This layer isn't structural; it smooths out any minor surface irregularities left in the compacted fill so the liner isn't resting against a hard edge or a stone. Screed it flat with a straight board and check level one more time before assembling the pool frame. This is also where a lot of installers catch a spot they missed the first pass — better to find a low corner now than after the water's in.

Don't Skip Drainage Away From the Pad

A level pad only stays level if water isn't running underneath it. Once the base is built up and compacted, make sure the surrounding grade still sheds rainwater away from the pool instead of toward it. Water that pools against the base, or finds its way under the edge of the pad, will slowly wash out fines from under the compacted fill and undermine a base that measured perfectly level on installation day. A pad that sits slightly proud of the surrounding grade is normal and even preferable — just make sure that rise doesn't turn into a dam that traps water against one side of the pool instead of letting it drain past.

Regional Notes: DFW Clay and Denver Freeze-Thaw

Most of DFW sits on the Blackland Prairie belt, and the dominant soil across a huge share of residential lots is Houston Black clay — a Vertisol with high shrink-swell characteristics. That's precisely the soil that turns a pool base out-of-level within a single season if it's left unprepared: expansive clay swells wet and shrinks dry, and that movement doesn't happen uniformly across a pad, especially if part of it sits shaded and part gets full sun. Building the footprint up with clean, compacted fill dirt rather than relying on native clay to hold a flat grade on its own is the difference between a pool that's still level in year three and one that needs releveling every spring.

In Denver, freeze-thaw is the bigger seasonal factor. If the pool stays assembled through winter rather than coming down every fall, the base needs to drain reasonably well and be compacted enough that trapped moisture doesn't heave sections of the pad unevenly as it freezes and thaws. A well-compacted, well-draining base handles that cycling far better than loose fill or sand ever will.
