What NOT to Use Around a Culvert Pipe

Bedding material needs to be clean, well-graded sand or gravel — not whatever leftover dirt happens to be sitting in a pile from the excavation. Clay clumps, construction debris, and dirt with roots or organic matter don't compact evenly, and any voids left behind become the same unsupported-gap problem I described above, just distributed randomly instead of concentrated in one spot.

Don't use oversized rock or rip-rap directly against the pipe wall as backfill — large angular rock can point-load the pipe wall and dent or puncture thinner-gauge corrugated metal or HDPE pipe, especially during compaction.
