It isn't. A swing set base that isn't graded to shed water turns into a mud pit under North Texas clay by the second wet spring. These are two different projects with two different specs, and homeowners regularly mix them up. Here's what each one actually needs.

Two Backyard Projects, One Shared Mistake

A playset area and a home sport court both start the same way: clear the footprint, deal with what's underneath, bring in the right material, compact it, and grade it to drain. Past that point they're unrelated jobs. A playground base is about keeping kids out of standing water and mud — it is not a structural load-bearing surface, and it is not where the safety comes from. A sport court base is a structural foundation; everything you build on top of it, whether that's a poured slab, asphalt, or a modular tile system, will crack or move if the base underneath it isn't compacted correctly. Why the Base Matters More Than People Think

Most swing sets and play structures go into whatever patch of yard happens to be flat-ish and out of the way. That's the first mistake. If that spot doesn't drain, it becomes the wettest part of the yard the moment kids start using it — feet compact the grass down to bare dirt, and bare dirt in a low spot holds every rain that falls on it. In DFW specifically, this is a clay problem as much as a grading problem. North Texas clay has very low permeability, so water that pools under a swing set doesn't soak in — it sits on the surface, gets churned into mud by foot traffic, and stays slick for days after a storm. Denver's sandier soils in the plains drain faster, but the same principle applies: a play area that isn't graded to shed water will hold it.

The fix is a regrade with clean fill dirt or topsoil, compacted, and sloped at 1 to 2 percent (about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of fall per foot) away from the play structure and away from the house. Most residential playset footprints only need 3 to 4 inches of regrade fill to correct an existing low spot and re-establish that slope — more if the area has settled into a real depression over the years. What We Deliver vs. the Safety Surfacing That Goes on Top

Here's the part we want to be direct about. The certified fall-safety surfacing that belongs under a swing set or climbing structure — engineered wood fiber, rubber mulch, poured-in-place rubber, or synthetic turf with a shock pad — is a specialty safety product, not a fill material. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes playground surfacing guidance that ties surfacing depth to the fall height of the specific equipment installed; a taller platform requires a deeper or higher-rated cushioning layer than a low toddler structure. That spec has to be matched to the actual equipment and installed by whoever supplies that surfacing product, the same way a septic drain field's gravel gradation gets set by the system designer rather than the dirt supplier.

Why Compaction Depth Is the Real Foundation

A backyard basketball court, pickleball court, or bocce court lives or dies on what's underneath it, not on the surface material itself. Whatever goes on top — a poured concrete slab, asphalt, or a modular plastic tile system snapped together over a compacted base — will telegraph any weakness in the base within a season or two. The most common failure we see isn't bad concrete or a cheap tile system; it's a court built on loose, uncompacted, or poorly drained fill that settles unevenly once it gets wet a few times.

The standard spec is 4 to 6 inches of compacted structural fill or crushed gravel base, placed in 2 to 3 inch lifts and compacted with a plate compactor between each lift — not dumped and rolled once at full depth. Crushed gravel (typically a 3/4-inch minus material) is the more common choice because it compacts to a dense, well-draining base, which matters under both slab and tile systems. Properly compacted structural fill can also work depending on what your court installer or the tile manufacturer specifies — check their base spec before you order, the same way a septic installer specifies material by phase. Basketball and Pickleball Pads

Yardage scales directly with court size and base depth. A half-court basketball pad, roughly 30 by 30 feet, at a 5-inch compacted base depth works out to about 13.9 cubic yards (30 x 30 x 0.417 ÷ 27). A standard pickleball court, 20 by 44 feet, at the same 5-inch depth comes to about 13.6 cubic yards (20 x 44 x 0.417 ÷ 27). Both of those fit comfortably in a single tri-axle load (16 yards) with a little to spare, or a tandem load (10 yards) plus a partial second delivery if your driveway access only handles the smaller truck.

Backyard Bocce Courts

Bocce courts vary more in size than basketball or pickleball — backyard builds commonly run anywhere from 8 to 13 feet wide and 40 to 60 feet long, well short of a regulation court. The base principle is the same: 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed gravel or structural fill, sloped for drainage, before the playing surface (often crushed oyster shell, decomposed granite, or a synthetic surface) goes down. Denver's Freeze-Thaw Problem

In Denver, an under-compacted or poorly drained court base has a second failure mode beyond settling: freeze-thaw heave. If water sits in a loose or poorly drained base instead of draining through it, it freezes in winter, expands, and pushes the surface above it up unevenly. Do that a few winters in a row and you get a court surface with visible high spots, cracks along slab control joints, or tile sections that no longer sit flush. A well-compacted, well-drained gravel or structural fill base moves water through and away before it has a chance to sit and freeze, which is exactly why the compaction and drainage steps matter more in Denver than they would on a patio that never sees a hard freeze.

Getting the Drainage Slope Right — For Both Projects

The slope direction is the detail people get backwards most often: water needs to move away from the play surface or court and away from the house, never toward either one. Build a 1 to 2 percent grade — roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch of fall per foot — from the high point of the pad or play area out toward a lawn, drainage swale, or the street. On a basketball or pickleball pad, that slope typically gets built into the base itself, since a poured slab usually keeps a slight crown or single-direction pitch matching the base below it. On a playground footprint, the slope should carry water off to the sides rather than pooling under the swings or letting it run toward your foundation. Check the grade with a string line or laser level before you consider the base finished — a slope this shallow is easy to get wrong by eye, and it's the single most common reason a graded area re-floods after the first hard rain.

What NOT to Use

Topsoil as a structural base: Topsoil is fine for the final few inches of a playground regrade where grass needs to establish, but it has no business under a sport court. It's high in organic matter that decomposes over time, leaving voids that cause the surface above to settle unevenly.

Uncompacted or loosely dumped fill: Whether it's a playground or a court, fill that gets dumped in one thick lift and rolled over once will look fine on delivery day and settle unevenly within months. Compact in lifts, every time.

Native clay as a court base: DFW's expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Build a slab or tile system directly on native clay without a proper structural fill or gravel base and you're building on a surface that moves seasonally — that's exactly the kind of movement that cracks concrete and buckles tile systems.

Unscreened fill with debris: Rocks, roots, or construction debris under a court base create high points and voids that compact unevenly, showing up later as soft spots or surface irregularities.

Material and Cost

For playground regrading, clean fill dirt runs $10 per cubic yard in DFW and $15 per cubic yard in Denver, delivered with no hidden fees. A typical 3 to 4 inch regrade on a playset footprint (12 by 16 feet or similar) works out to roughly 2 to 2.5 cubic yards — for reference, a 12x16 area at 4 inches of fill is about 2.4 cubic yards (12 x 16 x 0.333 ÷ 27) — well under our 10-yard minimum, so this is usually paired with another project or a partial-load delivery.
